And the box it came in…

Post-Image

Yesterday, being Christmas and all, my husband and I opened a few gifts we had bought for each other and put under the tree. And as always, our German Shepherd Gigi was there to help. For some reason, a few years ago, my husband held out the package he was opening and she just figured that she was supposed to help him unwrap it. She wasn’t ripping the paper off and eating it, she was ripping it off, dropping it on the floor and going back to take more off. She was really helping him. And that’s all she wanted. She clearly wasn’t interested in the book my husband unwrapped. There wasn’t a treat in the package. She was just happy to be helping Dad. She was completely enjoying the present moment of unwrapping a gift. Since that time, she’s done it with pretty much every present in our house. Takes us a bit longer to open gifts, but so what, right?

And that got me thinking. Remember when we were kids and the coolest thing about some of the big presents we got were the boxes they came in? You could make an awesome fort, or a mini grocery store, or office desk, or whatever out of those boxes. Sometimes they sat in our living room for days after Christmas being used in a million play scenarios. Did we like the gifts? Well yea! We liked seeing them under the tree, we liked wondering what was in there, we liked the unwrapping, we liked the actual gifts. But we also liked the boxes they came in.

So what’s my point? The animals in our lives totally get it. They get that it’s not about the gifts at all. It’s about being in the moment. It’s about helping and being together and having fun. It’s not about the gift, it’s about the joy that comes with choosing it, giving it, receiving it, and unwrapping something someone chose to give to you. So, really…it’s not about the gift at all. It’s the thought of the gift. And, of course,

the box it came in…

The animals in our lives are truly here to teach us.
