I know I’ve written about this before, but it’s been coming up lately in my conversations so that means I need to touch on it again. I’m talking about our Emotional Guidance Scale. This is the scale of emotions that tells us where we are in regards to any given situation. At the very top of the scale is Joy/Appreciation/Freedom/Love. At the bottom of the scale we find Fear/Grief/Depression/Despair/Powerlessness. I often refer to this scale when working with human clients in a Law of Attraction and/or Shamanic session. We try to figure out where on the scale they are presently hanging out and then we try to move them up the scale to a better feeling place. The problem that often comes up is one of patience…or impatience.
As humans, so many of us who feel crappy, or are hanging out at the lower end of the scale, want to immediately rise to the top of the scale. We’re looking for a quick fix that will allow us to move from Powerlessness to total Freedom. But, as I always say…
You can’t get there from here.
Think about it. If you’re feeling total Despair about a given situation that you find yourself in, there is absolutely no way you’re going to be able to talk yourself in to feeling Joy about that same situation with just one conversation. Or, in just one move. BUT, what you can do is reach for a better feeling thought.
Yes, total Despair is at the absolute bottom of the scale, but Insecurity is just a small step up. So ask yourself this. Can you move yourself emotionally from Despair to Insecurity about whatever situation you’re in? And doesn’t that slight shift give you just a small sense of relief? Okay, now, after hanging out in Insecurity for a bit, can you move yourself to Anger? Again, doesn’t that slight shift give you just a small feeling of relief? And, if you think about it, couldn’t you pretty easily go from Anger to Worry? Then from Worry to Frustration? And then, finally, from Frustration to Hopefulness? You’ve got to admit, feeling kind of hopeful about a situation isn’t all that far from feeling downright happy about it.
My point in this is, none of us can completely pivot and move ourselves from utter Despair to Joy in just one move. But with a little patience and being aware of where we are now, what we’re feeling, we can reach for the better feeling thought.
