This and that are true.

As is always the case, I pulled an Animal Card this morning from my favorite deck, The Spirit Animal Oracle by Colette Baron-Reid…

“Dolphin Spirit. This and that are true.”

And as is often the case…and really the whole point…it made me think. And I came to the strong realization that that statement is completely and totally correct. This and that are true. Then I realized that really ‘getting’ that gave me a really strong sense of relief.

In my opinion, to say this country has been divided over the past 12 months would be an understatement. The way I see it there are two sides to the virus story and two sides to the political story. Hell, there are two sides to every story! And no matter what the story, we all very often try to convince everyone else that our side is the right side. But, what if we took this card to heart and realized that BOTH sides of the story are true? Our side is true, but so it theirs.

We all perceive things differently. Based on how we grew up, where we grew up, who taught us, what resonates with us, how old we are, things that have happened to us in our lives, etc. We’ve created a book of truths for ourselves. And that’s okay! Just like it’s okay for our friend, family member, neighbor, etc. to create their own book.

The other day I was scrolling through social media and made a comment on someone’s post. One of that person’s friends then commented on my comment and we went back and forth a bit. And then….we thanked one another for the discussion and for giving the other something to think about. (I know, right? How often does THAT happen?!)

Both of us, instead of going at it from a place of aggression and trying to make the other agree that OUR thoughts about the subject were ‘right,’ simply spoke our truth. We wrote out our beliefs on a subject in a non-threatening, calm and polite way. Not expecting the other to agree. We just shared our thoughts on a subject. What was true for her was true for her and what was true for me was true for me. And both were right.

I think what I’m saying here is if we realize that ‘this and that are true,’ and if we go forward in discussions NOT trying to change anyone’s mind, but just sharing what is true for us and calling it that, our truth…

Maybe we can bridge the divide.

Live and learn with love…
