I’m a Yogi, meaning I have a regular Yoga practice. There’s this saying in Yoga that goes, ‘Stay on your own mat.’ In other words, your practice is your practice, and theirs is theirs. Don’t look at your neighbor in class and think, ‘I’m not doing the pose as good as he/she is.’ or ‘He/She isn’t doing that pose right.’ Another way of saying it is, ’You do you and I’ll do me.’ Stop comparing and stop judging.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately with all that’s going on in our world. Mainly, to mask or not to mask and to vaccine or not to vaccine. But, this works for pretty much anything that has more than one side to it. Politics, religion…ya know, all those BIG subjects.
The conclusion I’ve come to is this. It’s okay for you to feel and believe what you do. And it’s okay for me to feel and believe what I do. (It goes without saying that you need to be respectful either way.) What’s not okay is for us to make someone else feel bad because they don’t believe in the same thing we do.
Most of us are doing the best we can in this life. We’re paying attention, we’re weeding through all the information, and we’re making the best decisions we can based on what resonates with us. I’ll be honest, it’s been a long time coming, but I really have gotten to the point where I’m happy being me. I’m not perfect (no one is), but I try to be as authentic as I can. And I try to make the best decisions I can for me and my life and health and well being as well as for that of those in my world. I had a conversation with a friend about this today. How it feels REALLY good to be where I am right now. It feels really good to embrace myself…warts and all. To be happy when I feel I’ve done something good, and to be happy when I’ve recognized I’ve done something not so good but apologized for it and then made it right. It feels really good to make those decisions for ME. On other words,
I’m happy staying on my own mat.
Can you imagine how this world would be if we all were?
